A handy guide to increase your website’s mobile-friendliness.
In this day and age, it’s surprising to see so many business owners neglect their websites. They haven’t yet grasped the power of a good website, or they would ensure that it is always current, optimized for search engines and aces mobile-friendliness.
Global mobile data traffic has grown 8 times from 2015 to 2020 and currently constitutes 16% of the total IP traffic, a significant increase from just 5% in 2015. Moreover, 62% of the total minutes spent online in Canada are from mobile devices.
So how mobile-friendly is your website? I encourage you to conduct the Google Mobile-Friendly Test. This test will tell you how easily a visitor can use your web page on a mobile device. If it indicates problems, you should fix them to avoid losing rankings in search engine result pages (SERPs).
Here are some tips for improving the mobile-friendliness of your website:
- Avoid Using Flash: Ever since mobile optimization became a must, companies began to steer away from featuring Flash content in their websites because it causes unplayable content on mobile devices. Yet there are still businesses out there that continue to make this mistake. Google recommends that you use the popular program HTML5 along with JavaScript or CSS3 instead to avoid these issues.
- Switch to Responsive Design: The sizes of everything you have on your website changes when you switch to mobile and get a horizontal view. Text gets smaller, images get bigger and so on. By using responsive design, your website will automatically change its layout to accommodate the device that is being used. As of 2020, almost 50% of all websites have switched to responsive design.
- Adjust Tap Target Sizes: Users hate it when they have difficulty hitting a button or a link on their phone. During the process of mobile web design, some designers tend to overlook the sizes of these tap targets. This leads to poor UX and an overall negative effect on your website.
- Boost Your Page Speed: By going onto PageSpeed Insights, you can check the speed on which the web pages load. If you get negative feedback or notice that your competitors’ web pages load much faster, it means that you need to boost the speed of your own. This is especially important as 53% of visitors will leave your website if it takes more than 3 seconds to load — causing Google to lower your standing in search engine rankings.
- Keep Testing: While the responsive design method is certainly dependable, testing your website on different mobile devices and tablets will make sure that all your visitors, regardless of their device, will not encounter any problems. An iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy Tablet might display your web page differently from one another, so it’s important to check that it operates smoothly on all devices.
A positive experience on a business’ mobile website makes 89% of the visitors likely to recommend the business, while 46% of them would stop engaging with that business if their experience was negative. These facts highlight how crucial it has become to keep your mobile website top-notch at all times.
