Mobile-Friendliness of Your Website

In this day and age it’s amazing to see so many business owners neglect their websites. They obviously don’t understand the power of a good website; otherwise they would ensure that it was always current, optimized for search engines, and mobile friendly.

The Cisco® Visual Networking Index (VNI) reported that global mobile data traffic grew 63 percent in 2016. And according to Smart Insights mobile statistics, 62% of the total minutes spent online in Canada are from mobile devices. By now we should all realize that mobile marketing is important.

So how mobile-friendly is your website? I encourage you to conduct the Google Mobile-Friendly Test. This test will tell you how easily a visitor can use your webpage on a mobile device and if indicates problems you should fix to avoid losing rankings in search engine result pages (SERPs).

Here are some tips for improving the mobile-friendliness of your website:

  1. Avoid Using Flash: Ever since mobile optimization became a must, companies began to steer away from featuring Flash content in their websites because it causes unplayable content on mobile devices. Yet there are still businesses out there that continue to make this mistake. Google recommends that you use the popular program HTML5 along with JavaScript or CSS3 instead to avoid these issues.
  2. Switch to Responsive Design: The sizes of everything you have on your website changes when you switch to mobile and get a horizontal view of your website. Text gets smaller, images get bigger, etc. By using the responsive design method, the webpage will automatically change its layout to accommodate the device that is being used.
  3. Adjust Tap Target Sizes: Users hate it when they have difficulty hitting a button or a link on their phone and it’s not their fault. During the process of mobile web design, some designers tend to overlook the sizes of these tap targets. This leads to poor UX and an overall negative effect on your website.
  4. Boost Your Page Speed: By going onto PageSpeed Insights, you can check the speed on which the webpages load. If you get negative feedback or notice that your competitors’ webpages load much faster, it means that you need to boost your own. This is especially important as it will cause visitors to leave your website and Google to lower your standing in search engine rankings.
  5. Keep Testing: While the responsive design method is certainly dependable, testing your website on different mobile devices and tablets will make sure that all of your visitors regardless of their device will not encounter any problems. An iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy Tablet might display your webpage differently from one another so it’s important to check that it operates smoothly on all devices.
